Texas Winter Break 2026-2027 Dates by District

Texas Winter Break 2026-2027 usually starts on Monday, December 21, 2026, but the return date is not the same in every school district. In our current Texas district calendar data, the most common student no-school windows are December 21-January 4 and December 21-January 5.

Some districts also start the winter holiday window earlier, especially when a student holiday or teacher workday connects to the break before the weekend. The practical planning issue is the full student no-school window, not only the label printed on the district calendar.

Quick Answer

In the current Texas School Calendar dataset, most Texas districts use one of these Winter Break 2026-2027 patterns:

  • December 21, 2026-January 4, 2027 is the most common student no-school window.
  • December 21, 2026-January 5, 2027 is the second most common pattern.
  • December 21, 2026-January 1, 2027 is also common. In this guide, that means the break range confirmed in the district calendar data, not a separate inferred return date.
  • A smaller group starts Winter Break on December 18, and a few districts start as early as December 17 or return after January 6.

For example, Houston ISD, Katy ISD, Frisco ISD, Plano ISD, and Austin ISD list December 21-January 4 in our current data. Dallas ISD, Fort Bend ISD, Arlington ISD, Conroe ISD, and San Antonio ISD list a longer December 21-January 5 or connected December 18-January 5 window.

For broader planning, see the Texas School Calendar 2026-2027 key dates guide, the Houston area calendar differences, and the DFW calendar differences.

The Planning Issue Is Usually the Return Date

Winter Break looks more uniform than it is. In the current published district data, 178 winter break windows begin on December 21. The start side is consistent. The return side is not.

Four return dates dominate, and each creates a different first week of January:

  • January 1 return (Friday): Students are back the day after New Year's Eve. Families who travel for New Year's need to be home December 31. The return is a single Friday before the weekend, which some districts handle as a staff development day rather than a full instructional day.

  • January 4 return (Monday): The most common pattern. The first Monday after New Year's is still part of the break. Families get the full holiday week plus the weekend. Work resumes for parents before school resumes for kids, creating a 1-3 day childcare gap for working families.

  • January 5 return (Tuesday): One extra day beyond the January 4 pattern. That single day difference — Monday January 4 off — changes whether the first workday of the year is a school day or a childcare day.

  • January 6 return (Wednesday): Nearly a full extra week compared to January 1. The practical impact is a noticeably longer break, which affects camps, travel, and the timing of post-holiday activities.

Two districts with the same December 21 start can have students returning four or five days apart. The return date, not the start date, is what families booking return flights or scheduling January childcare need to verify on the district page.

Common Winter Break 2026-2027 Patterns

Across the 204 district calendars in our current 2026-2027 data, every district has a winter, Christmas, holiday, or midwinter break window listed in the December-January calendar data used for this site.

For family planning, the counts below use the connected student no-school window when an adjacent student holiday touches the break over a weekend.

The table is a planning summary, not a replacement for the district calendar. Some districts label the main break as Winter Break, while others use Christmas Break, Holiday Break, Winter Holiday, or Christmas and New Year's Break. District pages carry the full source-backed calendar when a plan depends on the exact return date.

Metro Area Patterns

Greater Houston districts mostly start December 21, with returns splitting between January 4 (Houston ISD, Katy ISD, Cypress-Fairbanks ISD, Pasadena ISD, Clear Creek ISD, Alief ISD, Spring ISD) and January 5 (Fort Bend ISD, Conroe ISD, Klein ISD, Humble ISD, Pearland ISD, Tomball ISD). Lamar CISD has a longer December 18-January 6 window.

DFW splits similarly: most districts return January 4, while Dallas ISD, Arlington ISD, and Richardson ISD return January 5. Mansfield ISD lists December 18-January 6. Austin-area districts mostly use December 21-January 4. San Antonio-area districts mix January 4 and January 5 returns.

See the table above for exact dates by district. For broader metro comparisons, use the Houston area and DFW calendar difference guides.

Longer or Unusual Winter Break Windows

Most Texas districts have a Winter Break or Christmas Break window that begins on December 21. The main exceptions are:

These outliers are exactly why district-specific calendar pages matter. Nearby districts can share the same Thanksgiving week but return from Winter Break on different days in January.
