DFW School Calendar Differences 2026-2027

DFW's 2026-2027 school calendars look aligned on Spring Break, but the planning pressure moves to October, January, and May. Major districts usually start between August 10 and August 13, and most use March 15-19, 2027 for Spring Break. The bigger differences are fall break length, winter return date, and last day of school.

For the complete regional index, use the DFW School Calendar Directory. This article focuses on the calendar differences that change childcare, shared custody exchanges, sports and activity schedules, travel, and summer care.

Quick Answer

In the current 2026-2027 DFW calendar data, the major districts most often start between August 10 and August 13. Fort Worth ISD and Garland ISD start August 10. Dallas ISD, Plano ISD, and Grand Prairie ISD start August 11. Many suburban districts start August 12 or August 13.

The largest DFW planning differences are:

  • Fall Break: some districts list multi-day October breaks, while others list single student holidays or no comparable fall break in the summary table.
  • Winter return: most districts begin Winter Break on December 21, 2026, then split around January 1, January 4, January 5, or January 6.
  • Last day: Frisco ISD ends May 14, 2027, while many nearby districts end May 21, May 26, or May 27.
  • Spring Break: most major DFW districts in this table use March 15-19, 2027; Denton ISD uses March 8-12.

Start Dates Are Close Across DFW

DFW start dates are clustered more tightly than many Houston-area dates. Fort Worth ISD and Garland ISD start August 10. Dallas ISD, Plano ISD, Grand Prairie ISD, and Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD start August 11. Frisco ISD, Arlington ISD, Keller ISD, Lewisville ISD, Mansfield ISD, Richardson ISD, and Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD start August 12. Denton ISD, McKinney ISD, Eagle Mt-Saginaw ISD, and Wylie ISD start August 13.

That four-day span still matters for households using the first week of school to coordinate work shifts, before-school care, or a move into a new district. It is a smaller difference than October, January, or May, but it sets the first care week for the year.

Fall Break Creates the Main October Split

Fall Break is one of the biggest DFW differences. Dallas ISD and Richardson ISD list October 8-12, 2026. Fort Worth ISD lists October 9-12. Frisco ISD and Grand Prairie ISD list October 9-13. Garland ISD, Plano ISD, Keller ISD, Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD, and Wylie ISD list October 12-16.

Other districts have shorter October windows. Arlington ISD lists October 9 and October 12 as separate dates in the summary table. Lewisville ISD, Mansfield ISD, Denton ISD, and Eagle Mt-Saginaw ISD use one-day October student holidays or short windows.

The fall break spectrum matters because the childcare difference between a one-day closure and a five-day closure is categorical. A single Friday off is a long-weekend problem. A Monday-through-Friday break is a full-week camp-or-care problem. Lewisville ISD (one day, October 9) and Garland ISD (five days, October 12-16) sit in the same metro area but create entirely different October planning requirements. Families comparing DFW districts need to treat the October column as a care obligation, not just a date range.

Winter Return Dates Split the January Week

Thanksgiving is the most consistent major break in this DFW set. Every district in the table shows November 23-27, 2026 for Thanksgiving Break or November Break.

Winter Break usually starts Monday, December 21, 2026. The end date splits by district. Dallas ISD, Arlington ISD, and Richardson ISD extend Winter Break through January 5, 2027. Fort Worth ISD, Frisco ISD, Plano ISD, Garland ISD, Keller ISD, Lewisville ISD, McKinney ISD, Eagle Mt-Saginaw ISD, Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD, and Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD show a December 21-January 4 window.

Grand Prairie ISD, Denton ISD, and Wylie ISD show December 21-January 1 in the main break label, while Mansfield ISD lists a longer Winter Holiday from December 18-January 6. The January return split changes the first workweek after New Year's Day for families whose childcare follows the student calendar.

Spring Break Is Mostly One DFW Week

Spring Break is the simplest major break in this DFW table. Most listed districts use March 15-19, 2027, including Dallas ISD, Fort Worth ISD, Frisco ISD, Plano ISD, Arlington ISD, Garland ISD, Keller ISD, Lewisville ISD, Mansfield ISD, McKinney ISD, Richardson ISD, Grand Prairie ISD, Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD, Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD, Eagle Mt-Saginaw ISD, and Wylie ISD.

Denton ISD is the main exception here, with Spring Break on March 8-12, 2027. That exception matters for shared custody, sibling schedules, and activities that cross Denton County and nearby Dallas-Fort Worth districts.

Spring Break alignment is DFW's single biggest structural advantage over Houston for cross-district families. In Houston, Spring Break splits two ways across the core table. A family comparing two randomly chosen districts cannot assume they will match. In DFW, 16 of the 17 districts in this table share the same week. The Houston comparison guide details that metro's Spring Break split; for DFW families, the practical takeaway is that Spring Break is unlikely to be the source of a cross-district calendar conflict.

Last Days Move Summer Care More Than First Days

The last-day spread is larger than the first-day spread. Frisco ISD currently ends May 14, 2027, which is earlier than the rest of the table. Mansfield ISD ends May 20. Fort Worth ISD, Plano ISD, Lewisville ISD, and Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD end May 21.

Dallas ISD, Arlington ISD, Keller ISD, Richardson ISD, and Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD end May 26. Garland ISD, Grand Prairie ISD, Denton ISD, McKinney ISD, Eagle Mt-Saginaw ISD, and Wylie ISD end May 27. That range changes the first week of summer camps and care coverage across nearby districts.

Why Frisco Ends Two Weeks Earlier

Frisco ISD's May 14 last day is the largest single-date outlier in either the DFW or Houston comparison table. It is 6 days earlier than the next-closest DFW district (Mansfield ISD, May 20) and 13 days earlier than districts like Garland ISD and Grand Prairie ISD (May 27).

That two-week gap at the end of the year is worth more to summer planning than any other single date difference in the DFW table. It moves the start of summer camps, family travel, and shared-care handoffs. A household with one child in Frisco ISD and another in Garland ISD has a two-week window where one child is on summer break and the other is still in class.

DFW vs. Houston: Which Metro Is Easier for Cross-District Families

DFW is the easier metro for calendar alignment. Spring Break is unified across all but one major district. Thanksgiving is universal. Start dates cluster within a 4-day window. The planning pressure is real but concentrated in two places: October break length and January return date.

Houston is the harder metro for calendar alignment. Spring Break splits two ways across the core table. October break is present for some districts and absent for others, creating a have/have-not divide that DFW avoids. First days, last days, and winter returns all vary.

The practical rule: a family coordinating across two DFW districts is most likely to hit friction in October. A family coordinating across two Houston districts is most likely to hit friction in March. October is a childcare problem. March is a travel-and-custody problem. Which one matters more depends on the family, but the DFW conflict is cheaper to solve.
