The 2026-2027 Texas school calendar is not one statewide calendar. Each district adopts its own schedule, so the first day of school, Winter Break, Spring Break, and the last day of school can vary even between nearby districts.
This guide gives families a statewide starting point. It highlights major Texas districts and the most common date patterns in our current 2026-2027 dataset, then points you to each district page for the full calendar.
Quick Answer
The most common first day in the current data is Wednesday, August 12, 2026 (87 of 204 districts). Thanksgiving week is November 23-27 for 198 of 204 districts. Spring Break splits between March 8-12 and March 15-19, 2027. The most common last day is Thursday, May 27, 2027 (72 districts).
The table below shows the total student no-school window for each break, which may include adjacent student holidays beyond the officially labeled break dates. Winter Break is the clearest example: most districts label it December 21 through early January, but the student no-school window can start earlier or end later when a Friday student holiday or a Monday staff development day sits next to the break.
For first-day-only planning, use the separate guide to when school starts in Texas in 2026.
How to Read These Key Dates
Break ranges in the table show the total student no-school window — the official break plus any adjacent student holidays or staff development days where students are off. A district whose Winter Break label says December 21-January 4 may have a December 18 early release or a January 4 staff day that extends the practical no-school window. The table captures that merged range.
The table is a map, not a destination. It shows which dates align across districts and which split, so families know where to look deeper. When a date affects travel, childcare, or work coverage, the individual district page carries the exact source-backed calendar.
Major Texas District Key Dates
These dates come from the 2026-2027 district calendar data currently published on Texas School Calendar. Some districts label the November week as Thanksgiving Break, Fall Break, or November student holidays, but it usually covers the same Thanksgiving week.
For family planning, break ranges in this table show the total student no-school window when adjacent student holidays or staff-development student holidays are connected to the official break. That means a district's official Winter Break label may begin on December 21, while the student no-school window may begin on December 18 if students are also off that Friday.

Common 2026-2027 Date Patterns
Across the 204 published district calendars in our current 2026-2027 dataset, 203 are labeled official and one is labeled projected. These are the most common patterns families will see.
| Date type | Most common pattern in current data |
|---|---|
| First day of school | August 12, 2026 is the most common first day, with 87 districts. |
| Thanksgiving / November break | All 204 current published calendars include some time off during Thanksgiving week; 198 cover November 23-27, 2026. |
| Winter Break | December 21, 2026 is the most common official break start; the total student no-school window may include adjacent student holidays before or after the labeled break. |
| Spring Break | March 15-19, 2027 appears most often, followed by March 8-12, 2027. |
| Last day of school | May 27, 2027 is the most common last day, with 72 districts. |
There are important exceptions. Socorro ISD starts on July 27, 2026, while Austin ISD starts on August 18, 2026 and Round Rock ISD starts on August 19, 2026. Some districts end as early as mid-May, while a smaller group runs into June.
Where Dates Are Consistent and Where They Split
Not every date on the Texas school calendar carries the same planning risk. Some breaks are highly consistent across the current dataset. Others split enough that the district page matters before a family makes a commitment.
Highly consistent: Thanksgiving week. 198 of 204 districts use November 23-27, 2026. The six exceptions are listed in the Thanksgiving break guide. They are all smaller districts — none of the largest metro districts like Houston ISD, Dallas ISD, Katy ISD, or Frisco ISD are among them. For broad extended-family planning, Thanksgiving is the most dependable statewide anchor; a district-specific booking still needs the district page if the household is outside the major-metro table.
Region-dependent: Spring Break week. The statewide split between March 8-12 and March 15-19 means a family comparing two randomly chosen districts cannot assume alignment. The split is not random — it follows metro-level patterns — but at the statewide level, Spring Break is a district-specific date.
District-specific: winter return date. Most districts start Winter Break on December 21. The return side splits across January 1, January 4, January 5, and January 6. That determines whether the first workweek after New Year's is a school week or still part of the break. Two districts with the same December 21 start can have students returning four or five days apart in January.
Widest variance: last day of school. The most common last day is May 27 (72 districts), but the full range in the current data spans from mid-May to early June. Frisco ISD ends May 14. Aldine ISD ends June 3. That three-week spread changes summer camp deposits, vacation start dates, and shared-care handoffs more than any other single date on the calendar.
Uneven: October breaks. Some districts build a full fall break of four or five days. Some list one or two student holidays around Columbus Day. Some have no October student holidays in the summary data. October is the least standardized month on the Texas school calendar, and the metro comparison guides break this down district by district.
Metro Area Patterns
The statewide table hides metro-level patterns that change planning for families inside a single region.
Greater Houston splits on Spring Break. Houston ISD, Katy ISD, Pasadena ISD, Clear Creek ISD, Spring Branch ISD, Lamar CISD, and Pearland ISD use March 8-12. Cypress-Fairbanks ISD, Conroe ISD, Klein ISD, Humble ISD, Spring ISD, Aldine ISD, and Tomball ISD use March 15-19. That split follows a rough geographic line — central/west/south vs. north/northwest — so a Houston-area family with kids in two districts cannot assume the same Spring Break week.
DFW is the opposite on Spring Break. Sixteen of the seventeen districts in the DFW comparison table use March 15-19. Only Denton ISD uses March 8-12. DFW's planning pressure moves to fall break length (ranging from one day to five) and last day (Frisco ISD ends May 14, Garland ISD ends May 27).
Austin and Central Texas start later than the statewide norm. Austin ISD (August 18), Round Rock ISD (August 19), and other Central Texas districts push the first day toward the third week of August, while most of the state starts August 10-13. San Antonio-area districts lean toward March 8-12 Spring Break, with Northside ISD using a longer March 8-15 window.
For detailed district-by-district comparisons, use the Houston area and DFW calendar difference guides.
