The planning differences concentrate in four other places. First day of school spans two full weeks, from August 10 to August 25. Last day spans from May 21 to June 4. Bad weather makeup day strategy varies sharply — some districts designate two conditional spring dates, others publish none. The October student holiday landscape ranges from no listed student holidays to three.

August 10-11: Early starters. East Central ISD, Northside ISD, and South San Antonio ISD start August 10. Boerne ISD, Edgewood ISD, and Floresville ISD start August 11. These six districts give families the shortest summer.
August 12-13: The median cluster. Harlandale ISD, Judson ISD, Medina Valley ISD, San Antonio ISD, and Southside ISD start August 12 — the most common first day in the SA area. Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD starts August 13.
August 17-19: Later starters. New Braunfels ISD, North East ISD, and Somerset ISD start August 17. Alamo Heights ISD, Kerrville ISD, and Seguin ISD start August 19. These six districts give families one more week of summer compared with the early cluster.
August 24-25: The fourth-Monday holdouts. Southwest ISD starts August 24. Comal ISD starts August 25. These are the only two SA-area districts in the current data whose first days align with or nearly align with the fourth-Monday-in-August baseline in Texas Education Code Section 25.0811. Comal ISD's August 25 date is one day after the 2026 fourth Monday of August 24, making it functionally the only district in the SA area whose calendar still tracks the statutory baseline.
The first-day dates translate directly to summer-length differences. The child in Comal ISD gets two more weeks of summer than the child in East Central ISD. That gap changes summer camp bookings, family travel windows, and the back-to-school preparation timeline.
Spring Break: One Official Pattern, Two Adjacent Holidays
The SA area's Spring Break alignment is the tightest of any major Texas metro in the current data. Houston splits between March 8-12 and March 15-19, while DFW leans toward March 15-19 with exceptions. Every district in this San Antonio comparison names March 8-12 as Spring Break.
Northside ISD and New Braunfels ISD separately list March 15 as an adjacent student holiday. Their official named Spring Break remains March 8-12, while the practical continuous no-school window extends through March 15. Keeping those concepts separate prevents the same label from representing different ranges.
For shared-custody families and families with children in multiple SA-area districts, the named Spring Break week is therefore one of the most reliable dates on the calendar.
Last Day: From May 21 to June 4
The last-day spread in the SA area is two weeks, matching the first-day spread. The distribution is heavily concentrated at the end of May.
May 21: New Braunfels ISD. The earliest last day in the SA area. Combined with its August 17 first day, New Braunfels offers one of the shortest summer-to-summer spans in the region.
May 25-26: The early-May-end group. East Central ISD ends May 25. Edgewood ISD, Harlandale ISD, Northside ISD, San Antonio ISD, and Southside ISD end May 26.
May 27: The dominant date. Alamo Heights ISD, Boerne ISD, Comal ISD, Floresville ISD, Judson ISD, Medina Valley ISD, North East ISD, SCUC ISD, Seguin ISD, Somerset ISD, and South San Antonio ISD all end May 27. Eleven of 20 districts. A family choosing between any two randomly selected SA-area districts still has a strong chance that both end on the same day.
May 28: Kerrville ISD. One day after the dominant date. A minor difference for most families.
June 4: Southwest ISD. The only SA-area district whose school year extends into June. Combined with its August 24 first day, Southwest ISD has the latest bookend dates in the area. Families moving into Southwest ISD from a district that ends May 27 gain eight additional school days — which means eight fewer days of summer camp to cover before the traditional Memorial Day-to-Labor Day summer window.

Alamo Heights ISD's March 15 makeup date sits on the Monday after Spring Break week. A March 15 activation converts the Monday after Spring Break from a student holiday into a regular school day.
Floresville ISD's May 14 and May 21 dates sit in the last two weeks before its published last day. Activation would convert those reserved late-May holidays into regular school days rather than changing a March or April family plan.
October Student Holidays: From Zero Days to Three
October is the least standardized month on the SA-area calendar. Several districts do not publish any October student holiday in the current dataset, while others list one, two, or three.
Northside ISD and San Antonio ISD have the densest October calendars, with three listed student holidays each. Southwest ISD, South San Antonio ISD, North East ISD, Somerset ISD, Alamo Heights ISD, and Seguin ISD each list two.
The practical difference between a district with no listed October student holidays and one with three is three extra days of childcare in a month that sits between summer and the Thanksgiving anchor. October is far enough from the start of school that a family's back-to-school childcare arrangements may not cover it, and close enough to the holidays that it competes for budget and planning attention.

These districts are not exempt from the instructional minutes rule — they either carry enough banked minutes or add makeup dates after a closure rather than pre-designating them.

How the SA Area Compares to Other Texas Metros
Three differences stand out when comparing the SA area to Houston and DFW.
Spring Break alignment. The SA area is nearly uniform. Houston splits roughly evenly between the two March weeks. DFW leans toward the later week but has exceptions. For a family coordinating across SA-area districts, Spring Break is not a source of conflict. For a family coordinating between SA and Houston, the SA district will almost always be on March 8-12 while the Houston district could be on either week.
First-day spread. The SA area's August 10-25 range is narrower than Houston's, where the spread extends from early August to late August, and much narrower than the statewide range, where Socorro ISD starts July 27 and a few districts start after August 24. The SA area has no July starters.
Bad weather makeup coverage. Eight of 20 SA-area districts publish makeup dates, compared with about 19% statewide. The SA area is above the statewide average, and its strategies — spring spread, late-May stacking, single-date reservation — mirror statewide patterns.
The Five Dates That Create SA-Area Planning Differences
Five dates account for nearly all the variation between SA-area districts.
First day. The two-week spread from August 10 to August 25 translates directly to summer-length difference. A move from an August 10 district to an August 25 district adds 15 days of summer.
Spring Break. All 20 districts use March 8-12 as the official named break. For Northside ISD and New Braunfels ISD, also account for the separately listed March 15 student holiday.
Last day. The two-week spread from May 21 to June 4 determines summer camp start dates and early-summer travel windows. A Southwest ISD family booking a camp that starts June 1 has a conflict. A New Braunfels ISD family booking the same camp does not.
October student holidays. The zero-to-three-day range changes October childcare requirements. Northside ISD's three October student holidays create three additional childcare days compared with a district that lists no October student holidays. Medina Valley ISD lists no October student holidays in the current dataset, leaving no October childcare gap in the published calendar.
Bad weather makeup dates. Spring makeup dates carry conditional risk: a date listed as a student holiday on the public calendar can become a school day after a major closure. Late-May stacking shifts that same risk toward the end of the school year, when families are already arranging camps, appointments, and early summer travel.
