Houston Area School Calendar Differences 2026-2027

Greater Houston's 2026-2027 calendar issue is a district-by-district split: nearby ISDs can share a mid-August start while using different Spring Break weeks, October breaks, winter return dates, and last days. The biggest family-planning conflict is Spring Break, because Houston ISD and Katy ISD use March 8-12 while Cypress-Fairbanks ISD, Conroe ISD, Klein ISD, Humble ISD, and Spring ISD use March 15-19.

For the complete regional index, use the Houston Area School Calendar Directory. This article keeps the high-impact differences together so a family comparing nearby districts can see where care, travel, custody exchanges, activities, and summer camps move.

Quick Answer

In the current 2026-2027 Houston-area data, August 12 is the most common first day in the major-district table. Houston ISD starts earlier on August 10, Fort Bend ISD and Lamar CISD start on August 11, and later nearby starts include Tomball ISD on August 18 and Pearland ISD on August 19.

The planning differences are larger after the first day:

  • Spring Break splits into March 8-12 and March 15-19 for many major districts, with Fort Bend ISD, Alief ISD, Montgomery ISD, Huffman ISD, Splendora ISD, and New Caney ISD creating longer or later exceptions.
  • October break is uneven. Katy ISD, Cypress-Fairbanks ISD, Klein ISD, Pasadena ISD, Clear Creek ISD, Lamar CISD, Alief ISD, Aldine ISD, Humble ISD, and Spring ISD show October break or student-holiday windows in the table, while Houston ISD, Conroe ISD, Spring Branch ISD, Tomball ISD, and Pearland ISD do not show a comparable fall break in this summary.
  • Winter Break usually starts December 21, 2026, then splits around January 4 and January 5, 2027. A few districts have earlier listed break-end dates.
  • Last days range from May 20 to June 3 in the major-district table, with Clear Creek ISD ending May 20 and Aldine ISD ending June 3.

Spring Break Is the Main Houston-Area Split

Spring Break creates the clearest cross-district conflict in Greater Houston. Houston ISD, Katy ISD, Pasadena ISD, Clear Creek ISD, Spring Branch ISD, and Lamar CISD use the March 8-12 window in the table above. Cypress-Fairbanks ISD, Conroe ISD, Klein ISD, Humble ISD, Spring ISD, Aldine ISD, and Tomball ISD use March 15-19.

That one-week split changes shared custody exchanges, sibling schedules across districts, and travel bookings more than the first-day gap does. A household with one child in Katy ISD and another in Cypress-Fairbanks ISD gets two different Spring Break weeks, even though the districts sit in the same metro area.

The split follows a rough geographic line in the current data. The March 8-12 group runs from central Houston west and south: Houston ISD, Katy ISD, Lamar CISD, Spring Branch ISD, Pasadena ISD, Clear Creek ISD, and Pearland ISD. The March 15-19 group clusters north and northwest: Cypress-Fairbanks ISD, Klein ISD, Tomball ISD, Conroe ISD, Humble ISD, Spring ISD, and Aldine ISD. A family comparing a north-side suburb with a west-side one cannot assume Spring Break lines up. The default assumption for Houston is that two randomly chosen districts will have different Spring Break weeks until the calendar confirms otherwise.

The longer exceptions matter too. Fort Bend ISD lists March 5-12, Alief ISD lists March 8-15, Montgomery ISD lists March 12-19, Huffman ISD and Splendora ISD list March 22-26, and New Caney ISD lists March 26-April 2 in the current data.

October Break Changes the Fall Care Map

October is the second major Houston-area difference. Katy ISD, Cypress-Fairbanks ISD, Klein ISD, Aldine ISD, Humble ISD, and Spring ISD all show October 12-16 or a nearby multi-day October student-holiday window. Fort Bend ISD and Alief ISD begin their October windows earlier, and Lamar CISD, Clear Creek ISD, and Pasadena ISD use shorter ranges around the same long weekend.

Houston ISD, Conroe ISD, Spring Branch ISD, Tomball ISD, and Pearland ISD do not show a comparable October break in the summary table. That difference creates a fall care gap for families comparing nearby suburbs with a core Houston or north-side district calendar.

October break is not a trade-off for an earlier last day. The data does not support the assumption that districts with an October break end later to compensate. Clear Creek ISD has an October break and ends May 20, the earliest in the table. Aldine ISD has an October break and ends June 3, the latest. The break is an independent calendar design choice, not something the district "pays for" with a later summer start.

Winter Return Dates and February Windows

Thanksgiving is the most consistent major break. Most Houston-area districts in the table show November 23-27, 2026. Alief ISD is the main table exception, with November 23-28 in the current data.

Winter Break usually starts Monday, December 21, 2026. The return side splits between January 4 and January 5 for many districts. New Caney ISD starts Winter Break on December 17, while Barbers Hill ISD, Brazosport ISD, Deer Park ISD, and Splendora ISD start on December 18 in the broader Houston-area data.

Some calendars add a separate February no-school window. Klein ISD lists February 8-12, 2027 as Mid-Winter Break, Spring ISD lists February 15-19, and Humble ISD lists a February 10-12 Student/Teacher Break. Those February windows are separate from the December-January Winter Break column.

Last-Day Differences Move Summer Care

The first day gets attention, but the last day often changes summer care timing more. Clear Creek ISD ends May 20, Pasadena ISD ends May 21, Katy ISD, Lamar CISD, and Spring Branch ISD end May 26, and several districts end May 27 or May 28. Aldine ISD currently runs later, with a last day of June 3, 2027.

The broader Houston-area data includes earlier last-day outliers too. Brazosport ISD and Cleveland ISD end on May 19, 2027. That range can move the first week of camps, travel, and shared-care coverage by more than two weeks inside the same regional market.

Major Outliers Outside the Core Table

These outliers matter when a household compares a major Houston-area district with a nearby smaller district:

  • Early starts: Cleveland ISD starts August 4, 2026, and New Caney ISD starts August 6, 2026.
  • Later starts: Angleton ISD, Friendswood ISD, and Tomball ISD start August 18, 2026, while Pearland ISD starts August 19.
  • Longer or later Spring Break windows: Fort Bend ISD and Galena Park ISD list March 5-12, Alief ISD lists March 8-15, Montgomery ISD lists March 12-19, Huffman ISD and Splendora ISD list March 22-26, and New Caney ISD lists March 26-April 2.
  • Winter Break outliers: New Caney ISD starts December 17; Barbers Hill ISD, Brazosport ISD, Deer Park ISD, and Splendora ISD start December 18. Cleveland ISD lists a December 31 break end, while Angleton ISD, Channelview ISD, Dayton ISD, Friendswood ISD, Huffman ISD, Magnolia ISD, and Willis ISD list January 1.
  • Last-day outliers: Brazosport ISD and Cleveland ISD end May 19, while Aldine ISD ends June 3.

Which Houston Districts Are Most Calendar-Compatible

A family coordinating across two Houston-area districts cares about alignment on five dimensions: first day, October break, Spring Break week, winter return date, and last day. The more dimensions that match, the fewer weeks of mismatched care.

The closest pair in the current table on Spring Break, winter return, and last day is Pasadena ISD and Katy ISD: both start within one day (Aug 13 vs Aug 12), both have October 9-13, both use March 8-12 Spring Break, and both return January 4. The main difference is last day: Pasadena ends May 21 while Katy ends May 26.

A harder pair to align is Houston ISD and Cypress-Fairbanks ISD: HISD starts August 10, has no October break, uses March 8-12, and returns January 4. Cy-Fair starts August 12, has October 12-16, uses March 15-19, and returns January 4. They differ on first day, October break, and Spring Break week. Spring Break is the mismatch most likely to create friction for shared custody or sibling coordination.

For families who cannot avoid a Spring Break split (one child in a March 8-12 district and another in March 15-19), the rest of the alignment still matters. A Katy-Cy-Fair pair differs on October break length and Spring Break week. A Katy-Klein pair differs on Spring Break week and winter return (Jan 4 vs Jan 5). The number of mismatched weeks across a full school year is the practical measure of calendar friction.
